Walk the Talk Service Leadership Awards

Each year since 1997, the Haas Center has honored five seniors at its Student Recognition Reception in May. The Walk the Talk Service Leadership Award recognizes the public service activities of students involved in service through the Haas Center. Students selected for the award are honored for their long-term commitment, and the behind-the-scenes work of building organizational infrastructure that is not often acknowledged. Established by Peter Carpenter, a long-time member of the National Advisory Board, the awards consist of a gift and a monetary award drawn from the Haas Center staff Annual Fund. The awards in 2006 were presented by Amanda Crowell Itliong, Assistant Director of Student Development and Leadership, and Katherine Casey, Public Service Intern.

2007 Walk the Talk Service Leadership Award honorees:

Nicolás Barceló ’07 (Human Biology)

Nicolas Barcelo
Nicolás Barceló has committed himself to Stanford Upward Bound (UB) and to the issue of educational equity, spending three summers with UB–more than any other student. He has held various roles within the program and has taken several education courses in addition to his challenging pre-med curriculum. Barceló actively seeks out information about education and educational equity on his own, which he then shares with the staff. He has also committed himself to the community of East Palo Alto (EPA) in many ways, including teaching ESL classes and translating for patients at the Ravenswood Clinic. Barceló plans to continue working with the EPA community after graduation as he prepares for medical school.

Richard Cox ’07 (Psychology, Political Science minor)

Richard Cox
Richard Cox has been involved with East Palo Alto Stanford Academy (EPASA) since his freshman year, culminating in being named Student Director. Providing continuity for the youth in that program, his commitment through three different staff directors has been unfailing, as has his willingness to take on any tasks to help smooth the transitions between staff. He spent two summers as a Youth and Education Summer Fellow and last summer was willing to work halftime to help the transitional staff director run the program. As a result of his long service, Cox has become the institutional memory for EPASA, a valuable resource for new and transitioning staff.

Cammie Lee ’07 (International Relations; MA, Sociology)
Cammie Lee
Cammie Lee is co-founder and current co-leader of Stanford Beyond Bars (SBB), a student service organization sparking dialogue and consciousness about incarceration issues. SBB students provide direct service as well, tutoring inmates in San Francisco jails. SBB was honored with a national award from MTV recognizing new initiatives by young leaders and the 2005 Dean of Students Outstanding Achievement Award here on campus. As a 2006 Sand Hill Fellow in Philanthropy, Lee worked at The Asia Foundation in San Francisco, developing strategic marketing tools, refining donor cultivation methods and devising solicitation plans for key constituent groups. She has also served as a trip leader, Program Coordinator, Financial Manager and ASSU liaison for Alternative Spring Break. Lee was selected as a 2007-08 John Gardner Public Service Fellow, and will receive a stipend to serve a postgraduate year in a nonprofit or government agency.

Jacob Lemieux ’07 (Biological Sciences)
Jacob Lemieux

Jacob Lemieux came to Stanford as a transfer student from Dartmouth and has been involved in public service leadership here from the start. He is part of the first cohort of Public Service Leadership Fellows and took the lead in planning and facilitating the Emerging Leaders Retreat. In additon, Lemieux has been involved in many service projects outside of the Haas Center, including the Smokeless Stoves projects that he started in rural India; a service project in Tanzania, where he is currently helping to build an organization called Bahati Education (Bahati is a Swahili word for "good fortune"); and connecting his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, to direct service projects in the Bayview area of South San Francisco. After graduation, as a Rhodes Scholar, he will be studying the molecular biology of the malaria parasite.
