Program Background and Purpose
The Huang Teaching Fellowship allows students to teach in rural China for a year with the possibility of extending the experience one additional year. Fellows will teach at the Ouyang Yu Middle School in Hunan Province, an experimental school founded by Dr. C.J. Huang in 1986. This fellowship is one of Dr. and Mrs. Huang’s various efforts to support Asia-related issues and education both in the U.S. and in China.
Program Description
The fellowship provides airfare, pre-departure training, health insurance, language tutoring, support in the field, travel to the annual VIA conference in China, and funding for a public service project. Public service projects developed by fellows in conjunction with the school have included: publishing a book of student writing and artwork in both English and Chinese; purchase of books for the school library; a tree planting project in conjunction with U.S. Arbor Day; and establishment of a short term, need-based scholarship fund for tuition and books
This fellowship is jointly offered by VIA and the Haas Center for Public Service. Applicants not granted the Huang Teaching Fellowship may be considered for other VIA or Haas Center programs.
Obligations

If Chinese classes are not offered at Stanford at a level or time that works well for the fellow, alternative arrangements should be made (such as taking the course at another local school, private tutoring, etc.).
