As the Communications Writer, Debra advances written and digital media communications at the Haas Center through writing, editing, and supporting essential Cardinal Service promotions to students and key stakeholders.
Debra credits her start as a communications writer to a summer internship turned undergraduate internship at Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, thanks to the Haas Center’s Community Service Work-Study program. She now freelances for news, nonprofit, and cultural organizations including African Diaspora Network and the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. Her objective is to use writing and communications to provide a platform for underrepresented voices and stories in the Bay Area and beyond.
Most recently, Debra served as a secondary English and Journalism teacher in Fremont, CA. She holds a master’s in education as a graduate of STEP and a bachelor’s degree in English from Stanford. She first joined the Haas Center in 2016 as a Cardinal Service Outreach and Engagement Coordinator, and is happy to have the opportunity to return to the communications and development teams at Haas.
Besides writing and teaching, Debra writes poetry and enjoys watching independent films and Tagalog movies. She is beginning to understand baseball thanks to her high school student athletes, but will always be a basketball fan.
