Graduate Community-Engaged Teaching Fellowship

Main content start

The Haas Center for Public Service's Graduate Community-Engaged Teaching (CET) Fellowship provides Stanford graduate students with the opportunity to receive support and training to develop, design, and teach a community-engaged learning (CEL) course in their area of expertise or interest that may be offered during the Stanford Summer Session. Fellows receive training, mentorship, and financial support to design courses that integrate academic learning with community engagement.

Also known as service learning, CEL courses combine coursework with real-world collaboration to address societal challenges. At Stanford, these are called Cardinal Courses and must:

  • Engage with a community to address a social issue
  • Integrate academic learning and community-based experiences
  • Provide mutual benefits for students and community partners
  • Encourage critical examination of public issues
  • Align with Principles of Ethical and Effective Service

To better understand what such courses might look like, check out these examples of Cardinal Courses.
