Global Service Fellows

Saturday, April 7, 2018
Deadline Month:

The Haas Center for Public Service is committed to helping Stanford students engage in meaningful public service and learning opportunities. We believe that international service learning opportunities contribute to students’ global education. These experiences can be the first step in helping students gain awareness of issues facing humanity, and the opportunity to seek potential solutions in partnership with local organizations.

For summer 2018, the Haas Center is launching a new program in partnership with Omprakash and their Education through Global Engagement (EdGE) initiative. Students accepted into this program will engage in the EdGE curriculum during spring quarter (receiving 1-unit of credit) and work to identify and confirm an internship placement for the summer. Internship opportunities are 9-weeks, full-time and can be with an Omprakash Partner (grassroots social impact organizations throughout the world) or through U.S.-based registered organizations that specialize in international service-learning opportunities. Examples of these organizations include: Foundation for Sustainable Development, VIA, Social Entrepreneur Corps, and Child Family Health International

Selected students will receive a grant of $3000 - $6000, based on financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The grant funds can be used to pay for costs associated with the summer service-learning opportunity. Funds will be granted to a student based on their acceptance by a sponsor partner or program. Note that funding cannot be granted for opportunities offered within countries on the U.S. State Department travel advisory list.

Funding for this program has been generously provided by Haas Center donors.

Additional information can be found here.

Students accepted into the program and receiving a grant are expected to: complete the EdGE 10-week curriculum; connect with their program mentor; finalize their summer placement by early spring; complete their 9-week summer experience; and complete a final reflective report, evaluation and donor stewardship materials.

Must attend the IPREP workshop.

  • will be returning to campus the following year
  • have not been involved in an international service-learning experience
  • will be involved in a program at least 9 weeks in duration and preferably longer
  • have not received previous Haas Center funding/fellowships
